Caffeine Anyone?

Wesley has been doing great on his CPAP which has been a blessing except for a couple of episodes that we found out about this morning. Preemies lungs are not usually developed which makes breathing hard, but we also found out that the part of the brain that tells us to breathe is not developed yet either in preemies. With that the case, there are times when he forgets to breathe or just gets tired and goes into apnea. The nurses will rub his chest to stimulate him and then he will breathe but they also have medicine that will stimulate that part of the brain to help him to breathe and that medicine is?? You guessed it: Caffeine. So Wesley started an IV of caffeine this morning which will help with this problem. They said that this is really common in preemies and most of them are all on caffeine. We are glad that this will help him not have to go back on the respirator right now. The only question I have is why couldn't I drink caffeine my whole pregnancy or now, b/c of the baby and now you are giving him an IV of it?? We are just thankful that they know what they are doing and they have things to deal with this. Wesley also started back on Neo-profen today for another three day dose to help his PDA close still.
Please continue to Pray:
  • Pray that this round of neo-profen will do the trick and the PDA will close completely and he won't have to have surgery.
  • Pray for his brain scan on Sunday or Monday that the blood in the brain will have taken care of itself and he will have no long term effects from it.
  • Pray that his lungs will continue to develop and that he would continue to do good on the CPAP and would not have any more episodes of paused or shallow breathing.
We appreciate and covet your prayers. We have definitely felt them and the hand of God guiding and taking care of us. They told us it would be a rollercoaster, and it definitely is. We are thankful that God is with us in the highs and the lows and for family and friends like you bringing requests to his feet. We can;t wait to bring our little boy home and for all of you to meet him.

  1. If caffeine will do the trick for Wesley, then bring it on!! I will pray for the specific items that you listed for Wesley and also for Greg and Lucy as you weather this rollercoaster ride. Love & blessings, Melinda Smith.

  2. I agree the caffine situation just doesn't seem right, none for you and all for him. ;-) Funny how these things work, but as long as it works for him I know you don't mind a bit! I love reading the updates and you all are constantly in my thoughts and prayers (including the grandparents, as one myself I'm sure they need the prayer support too). I love the fact that you're reading the psalms to him each day. What an awesome way to share God's Word with him. Go ahead and start reading other things to him too, nursery rhymes, children's storys, etc. It's never too soon to be reading to a child!
    Love and prayers,
    Beth

  6. I love you both and am very proud of you. Dad and I are praying together for all 3 of you(and all the other kids) every night when we go to bed. You are have been awesome parents already and Wesley is going to be so excited when he gets to know you both, and just wait till he gets to know his MiMi and her famous ice cream sundaes with whip cream and sprinkles and who knows what Grandma Pat and Grandpa Bill will think of. He may learn to make quilts and PawPaw can teach him to read for sure!!!God Bless You and keep you, Mom (aka: Shelley Kraska)

  7. Just discovered your blog and will be praying for Wesley. Ask your nurse about Kangaroo holding (basically skin to skin contact). It helps with temperature regulation and has been proven beneficial with preemies.

  12. Hi Lucy and Greg: My daughter Laura Marsh was a student teacher for Whitney Hannam this semester. They told me about Wesley because Laura is from Asheville and I am a nurse at Mission Hospital in the Surgery Department. My office # is 213-5135 (or 35135 from a hosptial phone). I am there everyday so if there is anything you can think of that I could help you with please do not hesitate to call me. Even tho we have not met you have a village around you. Because of privacy rules and such I cannot just come and find you but if you need something just call because I am very close by. Wesley is in the best NICU around. Hugs to you all, Barb Marsh
